Heat your home the smart way this winter – Top tips on how to save money on your gas bills

Top tips on how to save money on your gas bills

At Smart Plus Heating, we understand how important it is to keep warm without breaking the bank. That’s why we’ve put together some practical tips to help you save money on your heating bills this winter.

An annual boiler service can spot issues before they become costly and upgrading to a modern, energy-efficient boiler could reduce your energy consumption significantly. By swapping an older D-rated boiler for a modern A-rated one (at least 90% efficient) you could save up to 23% on your annual gas ball (depending on what type of home you have and how well insulated it is).

Heat loss is a major culprit when it comes to wasted energy. Make sure your loft and walls are properly insulated and don’t forget about your pipes! Insulating pipework prevents heat loss and reduces the risk of freezing during particularly cold spells. Covering your hot water cylinder with an insulated jacket could also save up to £50 a year.

A smart thermostat lets you control your heating remotely, ensuring you only use energy when you need it. Many models learn your routine and optimise heating schedules to save you money. Keep in mind that the weather changes daily and so should the temperature on your thermostat setting. By turning your thermostat down by 1 degree, you could save up to 10% on your energy bill!

If your radiators aren’t heating up properly, trapped air could be the issue. Bleeding them ensures they work efficiently, distributing heat evenly throughout your home and cutting down on unnecessary energy use.

Small changes can make a big difference! Use draught excluders for doors and windows, close curtains at dusk to keep the heat in and ensure furniture isn’t blocking your radiators.

Looking for a long-term solution? Installing heat pumps and modern radiator valves can future-proof your home and reduce your reliance on traditional energy sources. These upgrades often come with government incentives to help with the cost.

Install thermostatic radiator valves so you can control the temperature in each room. Keep them low around 2-3, when you aren’t in the rooms or out of the house. For larger homes, this can lead to significant savings.

If you’re on an energy tariff with cheaper rates during off-peak hours, consider running your heating during these times to save even more.
