What Size Aircon Do You Need?
Air conditioning output is measured in kW. The higher the rating, the more cooling and heating power the unit provides. Get the size wrong and you'll either pay for power you don't need, or end up with a unit that struggles to keep the room comfortable.
Room size is the starting point, but sunlight exposure, ceiling height, insulation and how many people typically use the room all affect the right kW rating for your space. Our free home survey covers all of this properly, room by room, rather than relying on a generic online calculator.
Below is a rough guide to get you started. We'll confirm the exact spec during your free survey.
| Room size | Typical output | Example room |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 20m² | 2.5kW | Single bedroom, home office |
| 20-35m² | 3.5kW | Large bedroom, small lounge |
| 35-50m² | 5.0kW | Open-plan lounge/diner |
| 50-70m² | 7.0kW | Large open-plan space |
| Multi-room | Multi-split system | Whole floor or whole house |
Indoor & Outdoor Units
Every air conditioning installation uses two connected units working together, one inside the room and one outside your property. Here's what each one actually does.
Internal Unit
- Indoor units let you set the perfect temperature for each room.
- Filters purify the air as it circulates, removing dust and allergens.
- Add the Wi-Fi option to control everything from your phone.
- Runs quietly enough for bedrooms and home offices, with sleep and timer modes as standard.
External Unit
- The outside unit gently moves heat out of your home in summer.
- It can also supply warm air in the winter, helping to heat your home.
- Modern compressors run quietly, so it won't disturb neighbours or outdoor spaces.
- One outdoor unit can power several indoor units at once with a multi-split system.
